More Bad Numbers for Democrats

Nothing is certain until the votes are counted next month — we still do that in this country, right? — but Gallup has some unfortunate news for congressional Democrats and Democratic hopefuls in its Presidential Approval Ratings published today.

Turns out Mr. Obama, at 45%, fares slightly better in the September prior to midterm elections than did Ronald Reagan in 1982 (42%); he’s dead even with Bill Clinton in 1994 (45%). Republicans in ‘82 and Democrats in ‘94 each suffered substantial  congressional losses in the midterm election.

More interesting, perhaps, is the fine-grained breakdown of just who does and who doesn’t think President Obama is doing a good job:

Should the Democrats fail to rally a big turnout among young, liberal, unmarried Non-Hispanic blacks with postgraduate degrees, Congress is likely to feature a whole host of new Republican whackaloons next session.
