One of the greatest things about the Universe is that, often, just about the time I am feeling good and satisfied with my progress in it, it reveals to me just how little I do know, and how much further advanced are others around me.

A Fade To The Finish

When I was a sophomore in college, a friend of mine’s father came to town to watch a horse he owned run in the Louisiana Derby. It was an exciting week. We got full privileges at the racetrack and spent lots of time hanging around the paddock with Dr. K and his horse trainer, watching Spartan Emperor get put through his paces, getting the inside dope on the mysterious world of high-stakes thoroughbred horse racing.

I have felt just the tiniest bit of pride in heretofore producing this series of essays wholly out of the cloth of my own thoughts, informed, I hope, by the various threads of texture, color, and substance I manage to glean by having an open mind, an inquisitive spirit, and a desire to distinguish between fact and fiction in this wacky world.

The Company We Keep

I haven’t been feeling much like myself lately. I’ve been a little confused, even, trying to determine just what it is I have been feeling, but whatever it is, it hasn’t been like the me I’ve been struggling to accept and to celebrate for much of the past forty-odd years.
